February 27, 2024 | Softball
CLEVELAND - For her play over the course of the I-75 Tournament, Ball State redshirt junior catcher / first baseman McKayla Timmons has been named the Mid-American Conference Softball Player of the Week.
Â
Timmons turned in one of the best weekends of her collegiate career, posting a .529 batting average with 12 RBIs, five home runs and eight runs scored. She hit at least one home run in the first four games of the tournament, including two home runs in Saturday's 9-5 (9) victory at Georgia State.
Â
Timmons started the game versus the Panthers with a two-run home run on the first pitch she faced. She added a fifth-inning sacrifice fly to tie the score at 5-5 to help force extra innings, before blasting a 2-2 pitch over the fence in left field for a ninth-inning grand slam which proved to be the game-winner. Overall, she finished the contest with seven RBI and two runs scored.
Â
Timmons started the week strong, going a combined 5-for-7 in the doubleheader sweep at Kennesaw State, starting with a lead off home run in the opener which ultimately stood as the game-winning run in the 9-0 victory. In the nightcap, she drove in the game's first run with an RBI double in the first inning and scored Ball State's final run of the game with a solo shot in the 7-4 victory.
Â
Timmons also had a hit in each game of Sunday's doubleheader at Georgia Tech, including a two-run home run in the first inning of the opener.
Â
The Ball State softball team opens its 12-game, three-state spring break tour Friday when it opens play in the EKU Colonel Classic with games versus Canisius (10 a.m.) and Purdue Fort Wayne (3 p.m.).
