
Track and Field Finishes Third in the MAC at Indoor Championship

YPSILANTI, Mich. -- The Ball State track and field team continued to impress on day two (Feb. 24) of the indoor MAC championship meet. After a weekend full of competition, the Cardinals will return third in the MAC. Â
The morning got off to a quick start with three Cardinals competing in the open shot put event. Jenelle Rogers finished fourth with a season-best throw of 14.90m. Sophie Daugard finished 12th with a throw of 12.81m and Malena Higgins finished 16th with a throw of 12.40m. Â
Rogers found herself on the podium yet again in the high jump, finishing fourth with a height of 1.72m. Â
Continuing field events, the triple jump provided another opportunity for Ball State to put points on the board. Mckenna Cinotte finished eighth, hitting a mark of 11.71m. Â
On the track, the Cardinals competed in multiple finals, including the 400m, 60m and 200m. Jenna Oriani had an incredible day, earning herself the title of MAC Champion in the 400m. Oriani crossed the finish line with a time of 55.31, good enough to place her in the record books for the fifth fastest 400m in Ball State history. Â
Not long after, Oriani helped secure more points for the Cardinals after finishing fourth in the 200m with a time of 24.63. Alana Springer was also a strong contender in the 200m, finishing sixth with a time of 25.01. Â
In the 60m, Springer collected another sixth-place finish, crossing the finish line at 7.51. Makayla Sumrall finished just tenths of a second behind, placing eighth with a time of 7.59. Â
Closing out the weekend, the Cardinals's 4x400m relay team ran against the clock and pushed themselves to earn the bronze medal. The team made up of Alexis Thigpen, Emma Potter, Paige Kirtz and Jenna Oriani ran a competitive race, finishing with a time of 3:47.18. Their third-place finish helped drive the Cardinals to third place in the team standings. Â
Ball State track and field ended the weekend with 61.50 points, third in the MAC out of all 12 women's teams. Â
The Cardinals will now look ahead to the outdoor season, which will open March 15-16 at the University of South Florida's Alumni Invite. Â
