Kelly’s 200 Freestyle Win Highlights Day 2 at Miami Invite for Women’s S&D
December 06, 2024 | Women's Swimming and Diving
OXFORD, Ohio - - Junior Payton Kelly earned her second win of the season, narrowly missing her own program record, to lead the Ball State women's swimming & diving program on the second day of the Miami Invitational.
Kelly won the 200 freestyle in 1:47.77 to fall just shy of topping her program record of 1:47.61 set last season at the Mid-American Conference Championships. In addition to being her second event win of the weekend, it was her team-leading ninth of the season.
Kelly would not be denied another spot in the Cardinals record book on the day, however, as she combined with senior Lilia Newkirk, graduate student Laura Wright and freshman Anna Keen for the sixth-fastest 200 medley relay in program history at 1:41.02.
Keen would follow the relay performance by just missing out on an event win of her own, taking silver in the 100 butterfly with the second-fastest individual time in program history at 53.84. She would also throw in BSU's 10th-fastest 100 breaststroke time at 1:03.49 in Friday's morning prelims.
Sophomore Alexa Von Holtz followed Keen's 100 butterfly effort with the second-fastest 400 IM in program history, placing third overall at 4:21.48. It was 0.27 faster than her time of 4:21.75 which entered the day second on BSU's individual top 10 chart.
The day also saw freshman Olivia Owens place ninth in the 100 backstroke with the nine-fastest time in program history at 55.86, while junior Alyssa Messenger added tied for the 10th-fastest with a 56.18 in the morning prelims.
Overall, the Cardinals turned in 10 individual top 10 finals finishes on the day, raising its meet total to 15.
After two days of competition at the Corwin M. Nixon Aquatic Center, the Cardinals are currently fourth among the four-team field with 436.5 points. Host Miami currently leads the meet at 819, followed by Indiana State (659.5) and Dartmouth (511).
Action in the Miami Invitational concludes Saturday with event prelims at 9:30 a.m. and event finals starting at 4:30 p.m.
