The Cardinals (7-8-2, 2-6-2 Mid-American Conference) fell 5-4 on Sunday at Western Michigan, who clinched the MAC regular season title with the win. Ball State faced a 3-1 deficit at halftime but came back to tie the score at 4-4 on Avery Fenchel's goal late in the match after Addie Chester completed a hat trick earlier.
The Rockets (6-7-4, 3-4-3 MAC) most recently tied Northern Illinois 1-1 on the road on Sunday after losing 2-0 last Thursday to Western Michigan at home.
Ball State's eight points put it in 11th place in the MAC standings, while Toledo has 12 points to stand in a tie for eighth place entering the final regular season game. The Rockets would likely have to win Thursday to make the conference tournament, which includes the top six teams.
Ball State is second in the MAC in assists per game (2.29, No. 22 nationally), total assists (39, No. 21), total points (103) and points per game (6.06) while ranking third in scoring offense (1.88 goals per game) and fewest fouls per game (8.59).
1-2 PUNCH: The duo of juniors Delaney Caldwell and Addie Chester stand near the top of the MAC and Division I leaderboards in multiple statistics.
The pair are each tied for the league lead with eight assists (No. 20 in NCAA Division I), 0.47 assists per game and three game-winning goals. Chester is second in the MAC in total points (28, No. 15 nationally), total goals (10) and points per game (1.65).
FENCHEL LOOKING TO BREAK SCORING RECORD IN FINAL MATCH: Graduate forward Avery Fenchel's goal on Sunday was the 30th of her Ball State career, putting her in a tie with Dee Nocero (2001-04) for the most in program history.
Thursday will be Fenchel's final opportunity to try to break the record.
SCOUTING TOLEDO: The Rockets went 7-9-2 (4-6-1 MAC) last year in head coach Mark Batman's first in charge at Toledo. The team from Northwest Ohio was projected in the preseason coaches poll to finish eighth in the MAC.
Toledo ranks third in the conference in saves per game (4.47) and yellow cards (19) on the year while being tenth in goals per game (0.94) and fifth in goals against average (0.941).
