OXFORD, Ohio - - Despite claiming nine event wins, the Ball State women's swimming & diving program suffered a 164-134 setback to Mid-American Conference rival Miami Friday afternoon at the Corwin M. Nixon Aquatic Center.
Graduate Laura Wright continued her dominance in the breaststroke, claiming her second victories of the season in both the 100 (1:04.90) and 200 (2:21.96). In addition, her 200 breaststroke time was one-and-a-half seconds faster than her time in the season-opener versus UIC last Friday.
The Cardinals also shined in the individual freestyle races, winning four of the five events. Junior Payton Kelly claimed a pair of freestyle sprint wins, taking the top spot in both the 50 (23.60) and 100 (51.83) races. The effort raised her season total to four individual event victories.
In the distance events, junior Kiran Stauffer claimed the win in the 500 (5:05.13), while freshman McKenna Potteiger took the top spot in the 1000 (10:28.48). Stauffer fell just shy of completing the freestyle sweep for Ball State, taking second in the 200 (1:54.65).
The Cardinals also received a strong effort from sophomore Alexa Von Holtz who won both the 200 butterfly (2:03.88) and the 400 IM (4:32.57). Von Holtz has won both 200 butterfly competitions she has swam this season, giving her three event wins on the year.
On the diving boards, graduate Grace Walker picked up her third individual win of the season, scoring 283.50 in the 1-meter competition. She did not compete on 3-meter versus the RedHawks.
Up next for the Ball State women's swimming & diving program will be the team's annual Alumni Meet on Friday, Oct. 25 at 6 p.m. in the Lewellen Aquatic Center.
