Soccer Drops 2-1 Contest At Loyola
September 03, 2023 | Soccer
CHICAGO - - The Ball State soccer team had some quality chances early in Sunday's showdown at Loyola, but a couple of unlucky bounces led to a 2-1 setback at the Loyola Soccer Park.
Â
The Cardinals (1-3-0) came out of the gate strong, with sophomore forward Emily Roper logging the first shot on goal just eight seconds into the contest.
Â
Ball State would get another excellent opportunity in the seventh minute, when senior midfielder Maria Broering ripped a shot of a corner kick past the keeper which looked destined to find the back of the net.
Â
Unfortunately, Ramblers' (3-3-0) defender Olivia Knab was in the right spot, stopping the ball on the goal line before clearing it.
Â
Ball State had a similar opportunity off a corner in the 20th minute, as another Roper shot found the back heel of senior forward Avery Fenchel three feet out in front of the keeper. This time Loyola's Kenedi Jones kept the ball out of the net, but her clearance attempt hit back off the goalie setting up another stop from Knab on the goal line.
Â
"We have to finish chances that we're given," head coach Josh Rife said. "We also must be tougher in and around our box. Heading on the road to Vanderbilt will pose another tough challenge and we have to continue to be more disciplined."
Â
Moments later, the Ramblers would capitalize on the offensive end courtesy of a goal from Olivia Rhodes in the 24th minute.
Â
Ball State would have several more opportunities in the opening half, and despite having 10 shots and four shots on goal, trailed 1-0 at the half.
Â
Junior forward Lexi Fraley looked to give the Cardinals momentum early in the second half, gathering a pass from Fenchel after a clearance by the Loyola goalie and taking it up the final third of the field before depositing it into the net.
Â
The momentum was short lived, however, as Loyola's Taylor Harrison netted the match winner a little over three-and-a-half minutes later.
Â
Overall, Ball State out-shot Loyola 14-to-7 in the contest, with junior goalie Bethany Moser adding three more saves to her season total.

The Ball State soccer team returns to action Thursday with an 8 p.m. ET / 7 p.m. CT kickoff at Vanderbilt.
