Cardinals Down Miami 3-1 in MAC Soccer Opener
September 21, 2023 | Soccer
MUNCIE, Ind. – A rocket off the foot of Kaitlyn Fraser staked Ball State to a 2-0 lead just past halftime, and Annika Klauss' steal-and-score goal in the 73rd minute sealed the Cardinals' 3-1 victory to open Mid-American Conference play on Thursday over Miami.
It was the first goal in the careers of both Fraser, a junior from Canada, and Klauss, a freshman from Bloomington, Illinois.
The Cardinals (3-5, 1-0) opened the scoring early in the contest on a driving score by Avery Fenchel that was assisted by Delaney Caldwell. Ball State controlled the action in the first half while outshooting the RedHawks 10-4 and posting four corner kicks, to none for the visitors.
After taking the 1-0 lead into halftime and striking again on Fraser's goal driven past the Miami keeper into the top left corner of the net, the RedHawks (3-5-1, 0-1) struck for a goal of their own at the 55-minute mark, by Taylor Hamlett. Trailing 2-1, Miami stayed aggressive and out-shot Ball State in the second half – threatening to tie until Klauss' goal halted thoughts of a comeback.
Klaus, sporting a splint on her left wrist, turned defense to offense during her late highlight to put the Cardinals in command. She outworked a Miami defender for a loose ball as the RedHawks tried to turn play up field, and her physical steal was rewarded with an open look at the goal.
Ball State has won seven of the past eight meetings against Miami, and continues MAC play on Sunday at Eastern Michigan.
