September 16, 2023 | Women's Volleyball
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - - The Ball State women's volleyball team used a solid performance on both sides of the net to earn a 3-0 (25-17, 26-24, 25-13) sweep over East Tennessee State Saturday afternoon at E.A. Diddle Arena. The Cardinals closed out their non-conference action today at the WKU Invitational.
"It was a great team win," Ball State head women's volleyball coach Kelli Miller Phillips said. "We had some young guys step up and make some big impacts today. I am proud of how hard we played today and I'm excited to build off this win for the conference season."
The Cardinals (3-8) dominated defensively with 16 total blocks against the Buccaneer's (0-11). Leading the way at the net for Ball State was Camryn Wise with five block assists and Megan Wielonski who finished the contest with three block assists.
Both teams went point-for-point at the start of the first set. Ball State finally pulled away from a 6-6 tie after Aniya Kennedy got on a hot streak which pushed the Cardinals to an 16-8 advantage. As the set one continued, Marie Plitt and Kennedy had back-to-back kills which eventually gave Ball State the 25-17 victory.
Ball State carried over the momentum in the second set, winning 26-24 which was led again by Kennedy and Plitt. The set was closer than the Cardinals had anticipated but two attack errors by the Buccaneer's sealed the win for BSU.
The Cardinals would jump to a 13-4 lead in the third set, and the Buccaneer's couldn't recover as East Tennessee State trailed the remainder of the frame. Ball State went on to take the set 25-13 which was capped off by a kill from Havyn Gates.
Overall, it was a balanced attack for the Ball State offense which hit .280 (41-13-100) in the contest. The Cardinals fiery offense saw nine players record one or more kills.
Kennedy led all players with a career best 16 kills, while Plitt was second on the squad with seven.
Setting it all up was Wielonski who handed out 29 assists while also serving up a service ace.
