Soccer Falls In Non-Conference Finale At Butler
September 14, 2023 | Soccer
INDIANAPOLIS - - The Ball State soccer team was never able to find its rhythm Thursday night, suffering a 4-0 setback to in-state rival Butler in its final non-conference match of the season at the Sellick Bowl.
The Cardinals (2-5-0) had the contest's first great scoring opportunity when a cross through the middle of the box by sophomore forward Delaney Caldwell found the back heel of senior forward Avery Fenchel to start the fifth minute of play.
Unfortunately, Bulldogs (4-4-1) keeper Addie Marshall was positioned just right to come up with the save in her first collegiate start.
Exactly one minute later, Butler opened the sixth minute with its first shot on goal and found the back of the net. While it was a back-and-forth battle much of the rest of the half, the Bulldogs struck in the final 30 seconds to take a 2-0 lead into the half.
Despite some solid play from redshirt junior goalie Bethany Moser, who registered six total saves, Butler added two more goals over the final 45 to secure the victory.
Up next, Ball State opens Mid-American Conference play next Thursday (Sept. 21) with a 4 p.m. kickoff versus Miami at the Briner Sports Complex.
