Smith Clubhouse Leader After Day 1 Of EY Invite

MUNCIE, Ind. - The Ball State men's golf team had a successful first day at the Earl Yestingsmeier Invitational, finishing 36-holes at the Delaware Country Club in second place, just six strokes back heading into Sunday's final round.

Reigning Mid-American Conference Men's Golfer of the Week, Carter Smith, enters the final 18 holes as the leader in the clubhouse, shooting an even 140 on the 70-par course. Smith carded a 71 (+1) in round one, while wrapping up the final 18 holes with the lowest score of the round at 69 (-1).

Braxton Koontz, who was playing as an individual for the Cardinals, had the second-lowest opening round of the day, shooting a 69 (-1) of his own. He followed with a 75 (+5) in the second round and is tied with teammate Kash Bellar for seventh overall at 144 (+4).

As a team, Ball State finished the day at 582 (+22) and trails only Butler by six strokes as the Bulldogs shot 576 (+16).

The final day of the Earl Yestingsmeier Invitational will begin with a 9 a.m. ET shotgun start Sunday at the Delaware Country Club.
