Springer to Run 200 Meters Sunday at Toyota USATF Outdoor Championships
July 08, 2023 | Track & Field
Ball State sprinter Alana Springer finishes her freshman year this weekend on a stage most track athletes dream about: representing her university at U.S. Track & Field Championships at Hayward Field at the University of Oregon. Sunday, she will compete at the USA Track & Field U20 Championships in her favorite event, the 200 meters. Springer qualified for the U20 championships in both the 100m and 200m, but focuses solely on the 200 this weekend.
Just one year after graduating from Avon High School, Springer caps a freshman campaign at Ball State that included a spot on the dean's list while studying business administration and helping the Cardinals to their first Mid-American Conference outdoor title since 2001. She was part of Ball State's 4x100m relay that won the conference championship and broke the MAC record.Â
"We are so proud of Alana for earning this opportunity to represent Ball State at the U20 championships here in Eugene," said Ball State head coach Adrian Wheatley. "Having the chance to compete against the best juniors in the United States gives her a chance to build upon this year's success and fuel our vision for her continued growth and goals of our program."
Coming out of high school, Springer boasted best times of 7.73 in the 60m, 12.06 in the 100m, and 24.63 in the 200m. Guided by Wheatley this year in the sprint events, Springer improved her lifetime best marks in her first college season to 7.55 in the 60m, 11.76 in the 100m, and 23.78 in the 200m. She was the top freshman point scorer in Mid-American Conference indoor and outdoor meets, and made her way onto the podium for top-three finishes in both seasons.Â
The qualification standard for this week's event was 11.80 in the 100m and 24.0 in the 200m. Preliminary heats in the 200 meters begin at 2:41 p.m. ET on Sunday. The competition is hosted at the University of Oregon and conducted by USA Track and Field. It will be broadcast on: USATF.TV, CNBC & Peacock.
