
Cardinals Fall to Mountaineers in NCAA Regional

With the loss, Ball State is eliminated for the NCAA Tournament and finished the season with a 36-23 record. West Virginia improved to 40-19 on the year.
Jalen Martinez reached on a throwing error by the third baseman with one out to start the bottom of the second. Blake Bevis followed with a five-pitch walk to give BSU runners on first and second. Gregory came up big with a two-out RBI single to center field. The Cardinals took a 1-0 lead into the top of the third.
The Mountaineers scored three runs in the top of the third on a three-run home run off the bat of J.J. Wetherholt.
Adam Tellier started a two-out rally with a double to left center. Hunter Dobbins followed with an RBI single to left field as Tellier scored from second. Martinez singled up the middle to give the Cardinals runners on first and second with two outs. Bevis notched an RBI single through the left side as Dobbins scored from second. CJ Horn came up big with an RBI single to left field as Martinez scored. Gregory picked up his second RBI of the day with a single up the middle. The Cardinals regained the lead, 5-3, as the game headed to the fourth.
West Virginia plated four runs on four hits, including a solo home run by Dayne Leonard. WVU took a 7-5 lead into the bottom of the fourth. The Mountaineers extended their lead to 8-5 with a solo home run by Grant Hussey in the top of the seventh. After 6.5 innings of play, West Virginia held an 8-5 lead. In the top of the ninth, WVU scored five runs on three hits and took a 13-5 lead into the bottom of the ninth inning.
Ty Johnson started the game on the mound for the Cardinals. He went four innings and struck out five batters. He surrendered seven runs, six earned, on seven hits. He got the loss and fell to 4-3 on the season. Ty Weatherly tossed 4 1/3 innings in relief. He gave up four earned runs on three hits. He collected six strikeouts. Jacob Hartlaub added 1/3 of an inning with one strikeout. He surrendered two earned runs on three hits. Casey Bargo threw a 1/3 of an inning.
Ben Hampton got the start on the hill for the Mountaineers. He went three innings and had two strikeouts. He gave up five runs, four earned, on seven hits. Aidan Major threw five innings in relief. He picked up the win and moved to 4-2 on the year. He struck out eight batters. Noah Short went an inning in relief with one strikeout.
The historic Ball State season comes to an end in the NCAA Regional.
