Five Male Student-Athletes Named To CSC Academic All-District At-Large Team

INDIANAPOLIS - - Ball State Athletics saw five male student-athletes across two sports honored Tuesday (May 23) with spots on the prestigious 2022-23 Academic All-District® At-Large Team as selected by College Sports Communicators.

The Cardinals were represented by three members of the men's golf program, including sophomore Kash Bellar, redshirt sophomore Ali Khan, and graduate student Joey Ranieri. The trio were joined by seniors Bryce Behrendt and David Flores of men's volleyball.

Bellar (Business Administration / 3.59 GPA), who captured the individual title at last weekend's inaugural National Golf Invitational, led the men's golf team with a 71.94 average over the course of the 2022-23 campaign. He finished 19 of his 33 total rounds at-or-below par, including a season-low round of 66 last Saturday at the Ak-Chin Southern Dunes Golf Club. He also earned 2023 All-MAC Second Team honors and is a two-time career MAC Golfer of the Week.

Ranieri (Athletic Coaching Education / 4.00 GPA in Graduate School), who competed in all 36 rounds for the Cardinals this season, ranks second on the men's golf team with a 72.88 average. A three-time Second Team All-MAC selection, he tallied 13 rounds at-or-below par this season, including a pair of rounds at five-under. The 2019 MAC Freshman of the Year and a four-time career MAC Golfer of the Week, Ranieri placed sixth at the Bearcat Invitational (Sept. 19-20) at four-under (209) for his best finish of the 2022-23 season.

Khan (Landscape Architecture / 3.80 GPA), who competed in 35 rounds for the Cardinals this season, ranks fourth on the men's golf team with a 73.89 average this season. He finished 10 rounds at-or-below par, including a season-low round of three-under (67) to place third at the Don Benbow Invitational with a score of six-under (204). He was also named to the 2022 Academic All-MAC squad.

Behrendt (Finance / 3.93 GPA), who saw action in 20 of the team's 29 matches this season, made three starts for the Cardinals and average 1.13 kills-per-set. He hit .364 for the season and served up seven total aces. Behrendt smashed a season-high 12 kills in wins over Tusculum (Jan. 21) and Quincy (March 24), while adding 10 kills at Lindenwood (Feb. 24).

Flores (Business Analytics / 3.62 GPA), a 2023 Second Team All-Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association selection, has helped guide Ball State to back-to-back league regular season titles. He started 22 matches at setter this past season, ranking sixth nationally at 10.25 assists-per-set. Flores effort helped the Ball State offense rank fifth nationally with a .335 attack percentage. He also led the squad and ranked 59th nationally at 1.67 digs-per-set.

To be eligible for consideration, student-athletes must be a starter or key reserve, achieve sophomore standing at their current school, maintain a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.50 and be nominated by her sports information director.

All five Ball State student-athletes will be eligible for voting for CSC Academic All-America® honors which will be announced on June 21.
