Records Fall On Day 1 Of MAC Women’s S&D Championships
February 22, 2023 | Women's Swimming and Diving
OXFORD, Ohio - - It was a record-setting day for Ball State as it opened the 2023 Mid-American Conference Women's Swimming & Diving Championships with a pair of program records.
The Cardinals opened competition at the Miami Aquatic Center with a bang, placing fourth overall in the 200 medley relay with a program record time of 1:39.69. Combining for the first sub-1:40 time in program history were senior Shelby Crist, junior Laura Wright, sophomore Hannah Jones and senior Apsara Sakbun.
Ball State made it two-for-two in the following event, as sophomore Gracey Payne, junior Marcella Ribeiro, freshman Payton Kelly, and freshman Kiran Stauffer had a final wall touch of 7:22.09. The effort shaved 1.77 off the previous mark set at last season's league meet.
After two events, the Cardinals are currently tied for fifth among the eight-team field at 54 points. Akron is first overall after winning both opening-day relays.
Wednesday was a quick night for the league's swimmers, as just the two relays were contested. Action does pick up Thursday, with three individual swimming events, 1-meter diving, and the 200 freestyle relay.
