
Garberick's 100 Breast Win Leads Swimming at Minnesota Invite

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - - Ball State's swimmers turned in several impressive performances over the last three days against some of the nation's best at the Minnesota Invitational held Nov. 30 to Dec. 2 at the Jean K Freeman Aquatic Center.

The Cardinals biggest performance came in Friday's evening session when senior Joey Garberick took top honors in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 52.69, improving his NCAA "B" Standard first reached at the House of Champions.

BSU's five male swimmers competed against a field which included three teams ranked in the Top-25 in the latest CSCAA poll: No. 4 Cal, No. 18 Arizona and No. 21 Pittsburgh. The host Gophers also received votes in the latest poll.Â

The Cardinals also received three top 10 efforts on the women's side starting with a fifth-place swim by Payton Kelly in Thursday's 50 freestyle finals at 22.42. Kelly also took eighth in Saturday's 100 freestyle with a finals time of 49.61. She was even faster in prelims, clocking in at 49.49.

In Friday's action, senior Laura Wright turned in an eighth-place swim of 1:02.66 in the 100 breaststroke finals. In addition, her preliminary time of 1:01.66 was the second-best individual effort in program history.

Ball State's two female swimmers competed against No. 13 Cal and the No. 25-ranked Gophers. Arizona also received votes on the women's side.

This weekend's BSU swimmers will also compete in several long course meter time trials Sunday before breaking for the holiday.

Following break, Ball State's women return to action Jan. 20 when it hosts Toledo. The men return the following week with a Jan. 26 swim at Miami.Â
