Cardinals Look Strong at Tom Wright Open
December 09, 2023 | Track & Field
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio -- Ball State track and field displayed a powerful performance Saturday afternoon at the Tom Wright Open hosted by Bowling Green State University. Many members of the team competed for the first time this season, displaying a promising outlook for the upcoming year. Â
The meet opened with shot put and high jump. Jenelle Rogers led the team, winning the shot put with a throw of 14.20m. Other throwers also found great success, including Sophie Daugard and Brooklyn Taylor. Daugard, in her collegiate debut, finished third and tied her personal best with a throw of 13.02m. Taylor also had a strong collegiate start, throwing a personal best of 12.70m. Â
In the high jump, freshman Malina Miller finished second with a mark of 1.74m. Â
Rogers had two other victories on the day, including her 5.83m mark in the long jump and a finish of 8.60 in the 60m hurdles. Also in the 60m hurdles, Lauren Graham began her collegiate career with a third-place finish and a personal best time of 8.92. Â
Alana Springer finished first in the 60m dash and ran a personal best with a time of 7.51. Taylor Hickman, Moriah Johnson, Emma Potter and Paige Kirtz also ran a personal best in the 60m dash. Â
The meet closed with the 4x400m relays, where both Ball State teams dominated. Finishing first with a time of 3:56.83 was the team made up of Lindley Steele, Paige Kirtz, Alana Springer and Jenna Oriani. The team of Emma Potter, Leila Williams-Molitor, Aaleiah Winford and Moriah Johnson finished second with a time of 4:06.49.Â
"It was great to see our young ladies compete today," said head coach Adrian Wheatley. "As I've shared with the group numerous times, competitions are a dress rehearsal for the big show. Today was no different. We had an opportunity to compete against other teams and work on being competitive. It is hard sometimes to stimulate those things during training sessions. The best way to continue to improve specific skill sets is to do them at game speed." Â
The Cardinals will be back in action following winter break when they head to Iowa City, Iowa for the Hawkeye Invitational on January 13. Â
