Cardinals Fall in Tough One Against the Bobcats
January 10, 2023 | Men's Basketball
ATHENS, Ohio – The Ball State men's basketball team was back in action on Tuesday in the Convocation Center at Ohio. Jarron Coleman led the Cardinals with 17 points, but BSU fell 76-71.
Ball State suffered its first Mid-American Conference loss of the season and fell to 11-5 overall and 2-1 in conference play. Ohio improved to 9-7 overall and 1-2 in league games.
"Nothing changed in the second half, it was the same things going on in the first half," said Head Coach Michael Lewis. "We just masked it in the first half with a few made jump shots. We had jump shots blocked and some old habits reared their heads. We talked to them as a staff and this performance started on Sunday. We won two games. We won at Toledo, we won at home against Akron, and we're good now. We can relax on preparation, we can relax on practice, because we've arrived. Just as hard as it is to learn how to win, you've got to learn how to handle success. I did not do a good enough job at getting us prepared to handle that type of success. This is a lesson that has to be learned. Unfortunately, we weren't able to survive it. Even as poorly as we played, we still had opportunities to win."
Coleman recorded his 15th-straight game in double figures with a 17-point effort. He added a team-high four assists with two steals and two rebounds. Jalen Windham produced 13 points along with four rebounds and one assist. Payton Sparks finished in double figures with 12. He brought down a team-high eight rebounds. Sparks dished out one assist and had one steal.
The game started as a back-and-forth battle that saw eight lead changes and one tie in the opening nine minutes of action. With the Cardinals down by four, 13-9, Coleman knocked down a 3-pointer followed by a step-back jumper to put BSU back on top 14-13. Coleman's five-straight points sparked an 18-0 run and gave Ball State a 27-13 lead.
The Bobcats answered with a 13-0 run and pulled within one, 27-26. Basheer Jihad recorded a layup before the half expired, which led to a BSU 29-26 lead at the break.
Ball State began the second half on a 6-2 run and held a 35-28 lead with 17:53 left to play. After a made basket by Ohio, Sellers scored on a driving layup to give Ball State its largest lead of the second half, 37-30.
Ohio came back with a 15-2 run, which resulted in an OU 45-39 lead with 13:10 left in regulation. The Bobcats were able to extend their lead to 12 points, 60-48, with just under eight minutes left to play.
Ball State did not give up and clawed back within three, 67-64, with 2:29 left on the clock. Windham knocked down a 3-pointer with 33 seconds on the clock to make it a two-point deficit, 73-71. Ohio made three more free throws down the stretch to make the final score 76-71.
Jaylin Hunter led the Bobcats with 23 points, four assists, and four steals. Dwight Wilson III produced a double-double behind 22 points and 10 rebounds. AJ Clayton closed out the double-digit scorers with 16 points along with six rebounds and added a blocked shot.
Ball State returns to the friendly confines of Worthen Arena on Saturday, Jan. 14, for a matchup with Miami. The Cardinals and RedHawks are slated for a 2 p.m. tip that will be the second game of a doubleheader with the women's team.
