Norse Slip Past Women’s Volleyball In Five Sets
September 16, 2022 | Women's Volleyball
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - - In another tough battle, the Ball State women's volleyball team opened play in the Stacey Clark Classic with a 3-2 (25-21, 18-25, 29-27, 22-25, 15-10) setback to Northern Kentucky Friday afternoon at Holloway Gymnasium.
Led by 18 kills from senior outside Natalie Risi, the Cardinals (8-3) twice rallied from one set down to force a deciding frame. Unfortunately, a battle-tested Norse (2-9) squad was able to hold on to an early fifth-set lead to take the match.
In addition to her team-leading 18 kills, her most since a 19-kill performance in the 2021 MAC Tournament Championship victory over Bowling Green, Risi finished the night with 14 digs for her fifth double-double of the season.
Risi was not the only BSU attacker in double figures, as she was joined by three others. Junior middle Lauren Gilliland was second on the squad with 11, while senior middle Marie Plitt and senior opposite Natalie Mitchem added 10 apiece. Plitt also led Ball State at the net with four total blocks.
Sophomore setter Megan Wielonski added her seventh double-double of the season, earning 18 digs while handing out 48 assists. Wielonski also served up one of BSU's two aces.
Also having a strong match on the defensive end of the court was senior libero Havyn Gates who tied her Ball State career high with 24 digs for the second consecutive match. She also served up BSU's other ace.
Rounding out a quintet of Cardinals with double figure digs were junior defensive specialist Kate Vinson and senior defensive specialist Maggie Huber with 19 and 10, respectively.
Overall, the Ball State offense finished the afternoon with a .204 (63-24-191) attack percentage and held a 99-to-89 edge in team digs.
Northern Kentucky connected for a .233 (69-22-202) clip, led by 20 kills from Reilly Briggs and 19 from Anna Brinkmann. NKU also held a 9.0-to-6.0 advantage in total blocks and an 8-to-2 lead in service aces.
The Ball State women's volleyball team closes play in the Stacey Clark Classic Saturday with another 4 p.m. first serve, this time versus tournament host and 10th-ranked Purdue.
