Volleyball Falls In Straight Sets At No. 10 Purdue
September 17, 2022 | Women's Volleyball
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - - Despite limiting tenth-ranked Purdue to its second-lowest attack percentage of the season, the Ball State women's volleyball team suffered a 3-0 (25-11, 25-23, 30-28) setback Saturday afternoon at Holloway Gymnasium.
Â
The Cardinals (8-4) held one of the nation's best attacking teams to a .198 (45-21-121) rate of success in the match. The Boilermakers (9-1) entered the Stacey Clark Classic ranked 13th nationally with a .291 attack percentage.
Â
Unfortunately, the Cardinals were never able to find a rhythm of their own on the offensive front as Purdue tallied 14.0 total blocks and limited BSU to a season-low .077 (32-23-117) rate of success.
Â
However, there were some bright spots for the Ball State offense, with senior middle Marie Plitt pacing the squad with eight kills and leading all players with a .467 (8-1-15) hitting mark.
Â
Junior middle Lauren Gilliland was not far behind, as she smashed seven kills and connected at a .286 (7-1-21) clip. For their play at the event, both Plitt and Gilliland were named to the all-tournament team.
Â
In the backcourt, senior libero Havyn Gates led the Cardinals with 14 digs, while senior outside Natalie Risi was second with 10. Risi also served up BSU's lone ace and had the team's only solo block.
Â
Eva Hudson led the Purdue attack with 16 kills, while Boilermaker libero Maddie Schermerhorn collected a match-high 17 digs. Raven Colvin led Purdue at the net with seven total blocks.
Â
With its pre-conference slate complete, the Ball State women's volleyball team now turns its attention to Mid-American Conference play, with the team traveling to Central Michigan for a pair of matches. BSU and CMU will square off at 6 p.m. Friday and 4 p.m. Saturday at McGuirk Arena.
