Griffith finishes fifth in high jump at NCAA Outdoor Championships
EUGENE, Ore. – Ball State track and field's Charity Griffith earned First Team All-American honors after placing fifth in the high jump at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships Saturday evening.
With her performance, Griffith becomes the 10th Outdoor All-American in program history and the first since Regan Lewis in 2018.
Following a fifth-place finish, Griffith is the third-highest-finishing performer in program history in addition to Ball State Hall of Fame inductees LaTasha Jenkins (1998, 1999) and Bonita Harrington (1983, 1984).
After clearing the first three progressions of 1.72m, 1.77m and 1.80m, the Arlington, Ind. native missed her next two jumps in the pouring rain at 1.83m and her status came down to her final attempt, just as it did during the NCAA Prelims.
Griffith took her approach and cleared the bar, cementing her All-American accolades as a podium finisher. Because of her success in previous jumps, Griffith was awarded fifth place. Griffith came into the annual championship event seeded 16th.

"Today was an awesome experience and a summation of our first-year campaign," head coach Adrian Wheatley said. "Charity's success was a culmination of everybody in this program coming together and working for what we talk about in being a part of something bigger than yourself. Charity was able to utilize all of the interactions she had with her teammates this year, the energy and the overall part of being on a team to showcase what happened today.
"It was awesome to see her put it together and enjoy the process. All year long was a dress rehearsal for the big show. We were sitting there during the competition and she and Coach (Holly) Hankenson were having conversations as if they were at practice - joking and staying cool. That is what was talked about all year long - being consistent in what we do and not changing what we do because of a different venue."
