Zumbro repeats as heptathlon champion at MAC Championships

Zumbro wins heptathlon for second straight season
KALAMAZOO, Mich. – Ball State track and field's Karlie Zumbro was crowned the heptathlon champion for the second consecutive season Friday at the 2022 Mid-American Conference Outdoor Championships. Zumbro set a MAC Championship program record by scoring 5,403 points in the competition.
Zumbro held the lead after the first day and never relinquished it after winning the long jump (5.74m) and placing second in the javelin throw (36.61m) and the 800-meter run (2:12.61). The 800-meter mark was an all-time personal best.
Jenelle Rogers had a strong showing in the heptathlon as well, taking fifth with a career-best 4,981 points. Rogers placed second in the long jump (5.62m) and used an all-time personal best 2:24.37 in the 800 to secure her place in the standings.
All three Cardinals in the 400-meter dash advanced from the prelims to the finals. Alexis Thigpen crossed the line in a time of 55.41, just .03 away a heat win. Payton Barlow (55.24) and Emma Potter (55.92) also secured their spots in Saturday's final.
Jenna Oriani advanced to her second finals race, this time in the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.03. Moriah Johnson also competed in the event and ran a collegiate-best 12.11.
In the 800-meter run, Kayla Jones won her heat and qualified for the finals with a time of 2:09.82. Karleigh Conner ran a lifetime-best 2:10.39 to join Jones in the finals.
As a team, Ball State sits in ninth in the team standings at 14 points with 13 of 21 events remaining to be scored.
The conference meet wraps up Saturday with the 4x100-meter relay kicking this off at 11:30 a.m. ET and concluding with the 4x400-meter relay at 3:20 p.m. ET.
