Arlington, Ind. native is first Cardinal to receive the award
CLEVELAND, Ohio – Ball State track and field's Charity Griffith was named the Mid-American Conference Indoor Most Outstanding Field Performer, the league office announced Wednesday. She was also awarded as the MAC's Most Valuable Performer, along with Joy Chirchir (Toledo) and Amya Clarke (Akron), at the conference indoor meet last weekend.
Griffith became the first Cardinal ever to be named the top field performer in the MAC and fourth to be named the overall most valuable performer, joining Julie Focht (1996), Jill Scully (2005, 2006) and Ali Bishel (2009).
The Arlington, Ind. native scored 20 points at the MAC Championship after winning gold in the pentathlon and high jump through record-breaking performances.
Griffith racked up a Ball State best 4,099 points to take first in the pentathlon. She won the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.74 – a personal best – won the high jump at 5-8 (1.73m), won the long jump at 19-1 1/2 (5.83m) and finished third in shot put (39-5, 12.01m) and fourth in the 800-meter run (2:23.04).
Griffith then cleared 6-0 3/4 (1.85m) in the high jump to secure her second gold of the meet and set a new program mark.
Both of Griffith's marks sit inside the top 16 nationally - 12th in high jump and 16th in the pentathlon - and qualify her to compete at the NCAA Indoor Championship in Birmingham, Ala., March 11-12.
