High jumper cleared 6-feet for second time in career
CLEVELAND, Ohio – Ball State track and field's Charity Griffith was selected as the Mid-American Conference Field Athlete of the Week, the league office announced Wednesday.
Griffith earned the conference's weekly recognition for the second time this season after also earning the honor Jan. 19 when broke the indoor program record in high jump.
The Arlington, Ind. native picked up her second event win of the season at the Meyo Invitational, hosted by Notre Dame. Griffith opened at 5-8 in the high jump and built up to clearing 6-feet (1.83m) for the second time in her career. She cleared 3.5 inches higher than the next-highest competitor.
That mark currently stands at sixth nationally and leads the MAC, nearly four inches higher than the next-highest competitor. She is currently the only MAC high jumper to clear 6-feet and has done so twice already this season. She is one of just 11 high jumpers nationally to clear 6-feet this year.
In addition to Griffith's recognition, Payton Barlow was mentioned as a nominee after winning her heat in the 400-meter dash and crossing the line with a time of 55.60, marking a new personal indoor best and the top time in the conference.
The Cardinals return to action Feb. 11-12 for the Feb. 11-12 for the Doug Raymond National Qualifier, hosted by Kent State.
