Women’s S&D Off To Record Start at MAC Championships
February 23, 2022 | Women's Swimming and Diving
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - - Ball State opened the 2022 Mid-American Conference Women's Swimming & Diving Championships the same way it closed last season's, with a program record.
Junior Shelby Crist, senior Alex Bader, freshman Hannah Jones and junior Apsara Sakbun combined for a program record time of 1:40.01 to help the Cardinals finish fifth in the 200 medley relay.
The mark shaved over half a second off the previous record of 1:40.53 set at the 2013 league championships.
Ball State was not happy with just one new program standard, however, as the 800 freestyle relay followed suit in the only other event on the first day of the four-day championships.
In placing eighth with a time of 7:23.86, freshman Gracey Payne, sophomore Marcella Ribeiro, sophomore Mary Kate Phillips and Sakbun combined to knocked exactly three seconds off the previous record of 7:26.86 set at the 2012 MAC Championships.
Wednesday was a quick night for the league's swimmers, as just the two relays were contested. Action does pick up Thursday, with three individual swimming events, 1-meter diving, and the 200 freestyle relay.
Preliminary round action begins at 10:30 a.m., diving a 3 p.m. and finals at 6:30 p.m. at BGSU's Cooper Pool.
