December 03, 2022 | Men's Basketball
PITTSBURGH – The Ball State men's basketball team was back on the court for a road test against Duquesne on Saturday from the UPMC Cooper Fieldhouse. Jaylin Sellers produced a career high in points, but the Cardinals fell on a buzzer beating 3-pointer, 78-77.
Ball State finished with five players in double figures for the third time this season. Sellers posted a career-high 22 points on 7-of-11 shooting. He brought down three rebounds and added one steal. Sellers played stout defense against Dae Dae Grant, who finished with just 11 points, despite averaging 20.1 points per game. Demarius Jacobs notched 12 points with three rebounds, an assist, and a steal. Jarron Coleman added 11 points with a game-high five assists to go along with his five rebounds and one steal. Jalen Windham produced 11 points with a game-high two steals and one assist. Payton Sparks collected his third double-double of the season behind 10 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. Sparks added four assists.
Ball State came out of the gates fast and jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the game's first 3:10 of play. During the run, Windham accounted for five of the team's seven points. After the Dukes scored their first points of the game on a 3-pointer, the Cardinals went on an 11-1 run. During that stretch, Sellers recorded five of the team's points, while Coleman added four. Ball State held its largest lead of the game with an 18-4 lead with 12:18 left in the half.
The Dukes went on a 14-6 run that took the game clock to 7:05 and cut the Cardinal lead to 24-18. Ball State answered with an 11-6 run and extended its lead to 35-24 with 4:07 left in the half. Duquesne ended the half on a 12-5 run, but Ball State took a 40-36 lead into the half.
The second half started as a back-and-forth battle. The Cardinals outscored the Dukes 11-8 in the first four minutes of play and held a 51-44 lead. Duquesne answered with an 11-0 run and took its first lead of the game, 55-51, with 12:21 left on the clock. The Cardinals regrouped and responded with a 5-0 run that gave BSU a 56-55 lead with just over 11 minutes on the clock. The team traded the lead five more times before the Dukes were able to take a 63-60 lead with just under eight minutes left.
The Cardinals were able to cut the deficit to one, 66-65, with 5:50 left in regulation. With the score 68-65, in favor of Duquesne, the Cardinals went on an 8-5 run to tie the game at 73-73 with 58 seconds left in the game. Sparks gave the Cardinals a 74-73 lead with a made free throw. After two free throws by Grant, Sellers made a driving layup and drew the foul. Sellers converted the and-1 opportunity and gave Ball State a 77-75 lead with 12 seconds on the clock. Jimmy Clark threw up a 3-pointer that beat the buzzer to give Duquesne a 78-77 victory.
"They made one more play," said Head Coach Michael Lewis. "We guarded it and were organized on the defensive end. We took away their initial action and second action. The guy was dribbling around and throws a line drive in. Listen, that play didn't beat us. It's the culmination of different things and break downs throughout the 40 minutes. It allowed them to have an opportunity to win. I'm not into moral victories. I've got a burn in my stomach, if they don't have the same burn then this isn't the program for them. Our guys played their butts off. They fought and clawed. They were in a tough environment, and they showed fight that this program hasn't seen in a long time. They did a good job of neutralizing Payton, and I thought we did a good job of neutralizing Dae Dae Grant. We did a lot of good things. This one's tough because we were in a position to win, and a guy just throws one in. But that's basketball. I told them to just continue to put yourselves in positions to win at the under 4-minute timeout. These will turn. The fact that they're in these games and not wilting. They're fighting and have a great competitive spirit. These guys are giving us what they got."
Clark led the Dukes with 16 points and tied for a team-best six rebounds. He added a team-high four assists and one steal. Tevin Brewer finished with 14 points and one assist. Grant rounded out the double-digit scoring for Duquesne with 11 points, four rebounds, and added one steal.
The Cardinals are back on the road for a Wednesday showdown with Eastern Illinois at 8 p.m. ET.
