Cardinals host Bobcats for home finale, Senior Night
November 14, 2022 | Football
Ball State and Ohio set for 7 p.m. ET kickoff at Scheumann Stadium
MUNCIE, Ind. – A lot is on the line Tuesday night at Scheumann Stadium when Ball State and Ohio meet for the 27th time in series history for a 7 p.m. ET kick.
The Cardinals are aiming to become bowl-eligible and make an appearance in a bowl game for the third consecutive season, something has never been done before in program history. Meanwhile, the Bobcats are aiming to stay atop the East Division standings as they look to make it to Detroit for the Mid-American Conference Championship game.
Tuesday night also marks the final time that Ball State's seniors will suit up at home.
"We've got a great group of seniors that will be taking the field for the last time here at Scheumann Stadium," head coach Mick Neu said. ""Just like every class that I've been fortunate enough to coach here at Ball State over the last seven years, it's special. I love them. I have so much respect for the time, energy and commitment that they put in from the time they arrive here as freshmen until they leave the field for the last time. This is a group of guys that are so high character and have given everything that they have to our program.
"To be sitting in the position we're in and have a great finish to our season and become bowl-eligible for the third straight season - the first time that would happen in program history - there's a lot of stuff on the table that has yet to be painted in this picture. I love this group of guys and appreciate everything that they've given and sacrificed to help Ball State be the best that it can be."
Behind the leadership of the seniors, Ball State has won 13 games in conference play since 2020, good for second-most in the MAC behind Toledo (14). The Cardinals sit in front of Kent State (12), Central Michigan (12) and Buffalo (11) in terms of league wins over the last two-plus seasons in the always-competitive MAC.
With both Ball State and Ohio playing last Tuesday, the two teams will enter with the same amount of days between games, something that isn't always the case, especially during midweek #MACtion. Since 2020, the Cardinals are 14-8 when they get the same amount of rest as their opponent, which is tops in the league with a 63.8 winning percentage. Buffalo is next on the list at 13-8, followed by Eastern Michigan at 12-10.
The game will be broadcast on the airwaves with Voice of the Cardinals Mick Tidrow, Haven Fields and Jack McMullen on the Ball State Gainbridge Radio Network, WLBC and SiriusXM 984. The game will be televised on ESPN2 with Chris Cotter, Dustin Fox and Taylor Davis describing the action.
Inside the Series: Ohio
Ball State and Ohio are set to face off for the 27th time in series history Tuesday night at Scheumann Stadium. The Bobcats have won six of the last eight meetings since 1999, including each of the last three duels.
The Cardinals are 8-4 when welcoming Ohio to Muncie all-time. In addition, Ball State is 6-2 against Ohio when the two teams meet in November.
Coach Neu on Ohio...
"It's a great opportunity. We've got a very, very good Ohio football team that is coming in here. Coach (Tim) Albin has done a great job there in his second year. They're in the top spot in the MAC East at 5-1, so there's a lot at stake for them. There's also a lot at stake for us. Give them credit, they're the hottest team in the conference right now having won five straight games. When you turn the tape on, you see the consistency that they play with week in and week out. They're a good football team."
The Race to 30
Since 2015, midweek #MACtion has had a good indicator in determining a winner. Over the last seven-plus years, the first team to score 30 points is 96-4 in league games played between Tuesday-Thursday, good for a 96.0 win percentage.
In that span, there have only been 29 games (out of 129) that a winner has not scored at least 30 points.
