November 12, 2022 | Men's Basketball
TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – The Ball State men's basketball team was back in action on Saturday for its first road matchup of the year against Indiana State. Jarron Coleman led the Cardinals with a game-high 29 points and a team-high four assists, as BSU fell to ISU 83-71.
Coleman led the Cardinals with a game-high 29 points. He added a team-high four assists and four rebounds. Demarius produced his first double-double in a Cardinal uniform with a game-high 10 rebounds and 10 points. Demarius Jacobs added three assists and one block. Payton Sparks finished with 18 points, a team-high two blocks, and added one assist.
The first three minutes of the game were a back-and-forth battle with the score 8-6, in favor of the Sycamores. Indiana State went on an 11-2 run and extended its lead to 19-8 with just under 12 minutes left in the half.
The Cardinals answered with a 7-0 run and cut the lead to 19-15 with eight minutes left in the half. The Sycamores were able to extend their lead and took a 43-31 advantage at the half.
After two free throws put ISU up 53-40, BSU started to battle back. The Cardinals went on a 12-5 run and cut the deficit to 58-52 with 12 minutes left in regulation.
With 10:13 left in the game, the Sycamores held a 12-point lead, 65-53. Ball State went on a 9-2 run that was capped off by Coleman scoring on an in-bound play.
With the score 69-64 with 5:30 left in regulation, Indiana State went on a 6-1 run. The Sycamores' early lead was too much for the Cardinals to overcome as Indiana State won by a final score of 83-71.
Cooper Neese led Indiana State with 17 points and added four rebounds. Courvoisier McCauley notched 14 points with a team-high six rebounds. Jayson Kent, Trenton Gibson, and Kailex Stephens all collected double-digit points as the Sycamores had five players in double figures.
"They came out and played hard and played tougher," said Head Coach Michael Lewis. "I told our guys that we didn't quit. We didn't play smart, but we didn't quit. Some old habits reared their head. We can't win basketball games playing as undisciplined as we did at some times throughout the game. We got it to six, got it to five, then we just went off and did our own thing. Continue to do that over and over and over. We do something crazy, we break down defensively, we missed a shot or someone didn't throw us the ball, and we're all up in our feelings. Get back, get another stop, get a good offensive possession, and just try to dwindle it down and get them into mistakes. We're not tough enough, in my opinion, to get that done."
Ball State fell to 1-1 on the season, while Indiana State moved to 2-0 on the year. The Cardinals return to action on Wednesday, Nov. 16, for a road contest against the Omaha Mavericks. Jump is scheduled for 8:37 p.m. ET.
