Plitt, Buckley Lead WVB To Four-Set Win At Ohio
November 12, 2022 | Women's Volleyball
ATHENS, Ohio - - The Ball State women's volleyball team secured a top two seed and first-round bye in the upcoming 2022 Mid-American Conference Championship with a 3-1 (25-21, 14-25, 25-18, 25-21) victory over Ohio Saturday evening at the Convocation Center.
Â
One night after the Bobcats (18-10; 12-5 MAC) snapped the nation's eighth-longest winning streak at 13 matches, the Cardinals (22-7; 14-3 MAC) responded with a huge statement, opening the match with an 11-2 run.
Â
"I think set one was huge," head coach Kelli Miller Phillips said. "Ohio had a huge crowd, including the band and football team, and great energy. I felt like we came out focused, executed our game plan, and set the tone that we were going to come out swinging. That really made a different."
Â
BSU went on to win the frame 25-21, and while Ohio battled back to take the second set, the Cardinals were not deterred and captured the final two frames.
Â
Leading the charge for the Cardinals was senior middle Marie Plitt who smashed a season-high 17 kills and hit an impressive .455 (17-2-33). It was her 14th match of the season in double figures and the 22nd time in 29 matches she has hit .300-or-better.
Â
"Marie turned in a clutch performance," Phillips said. "We ran some different routes on offense and that opened up not only Marie, but our lefts as well. Marie's versatility and ability to hit all angles really helped lift us today."
Â
And while she did not reach double figures, freshman opposite Madison Buckley set the tone in the final two sets with a career-high eight kills and a .400 (8-2-15) attack percentage off the bench. She also registered a solo block.
Â
"Madison was a game-changer tonight," Phillips added. "Not only was she hitting great shots, but her physical net presence really slowed down Ohio's talented left sides. She was a big-time spark and is someone who is always working hard and ready to go. It certainly paid off tonight for her and the team."
Â
Overall, the Cardinals finished the night with a .221 (52-19-149) attack percentage, including a .412 (8-1-17) effort from yesterday's leading attacker junior middle Lauren Gilliland. Junior outside Cait Snyder added 13 kills and a .205 (13-5-39) hitting mark.
At the net, Gilliland tied for team-high honors with three blocks. The other BSU player with three blocks was sophomore setter Megan Wielonski who also dished out 41 assists and was credited with 10 digs for her 18th double-double of the season.
Â
In the backcourt, Ball State senior libero Maggie Huber led all players with 27 digs, while senior defensive specialist Havyn Gates added two. Gates also turned in a strong performance from the service line with three aces, while Wielonski served up two and Huber one.
Â
The defensive effort also helped limit Ohio to a .167 (50-24-156) attack percentage, with just one Bobcat reaching double figure kills as Kristy Frank scored 12. A pair of OU players tied for team-high honors with 17 digs, helping the hosts finish the night with a 71-to-66 edge in total digs.
Â
The Ball State women's volleyball team returns to action Wednesday (Nov. 16), when it closes the regular season with 6 p.m. first serve versus Toledo.
Â
With a win against the Rockets (18-10; 11-6 MAC), the Cardinals will secure the 2022 MAC Regular Season Championship and hosting rights to the conference tournament.
