YPSILANTI, Mich. - - In the first of two meets this weekend, the Ball State gymnastics team turned in its second-best score of the season on the way to a second-place finish in a quad-meet at Eastern Michigan.
Â
The Cardinals scored big at the Gervin GameAbove Center, finishing the meet with a 195.025. Unfortunately, it was not enough to get past 18th-ranked Western Michigan which turned in an impressive tally of 196.100.
Â
However, Ball State was able to out-score Wisconsin-Oshkosh (191.600) and tie the Eagles (195.025).
Â
Once again it was sophomore Suki Pfister with the day's best score for the Cardinals, as she tied for the event title on vault with a mark of 9.875.
Â
Overall, the Cardinals counted five scores of 9.800-or-higher in the meet. The second-highest mark came from sophomore Victoria Henry on vault at 9.850. Senior Lauren Volpe went above the mark for the third time this season, leading the squad on beam at 9.825.
Â
In her first career appearance in the competitive floor lineup, freshman Erica Cooper led the way with an impressive 9.800. It ties as the third-best floor score for the Cardinals so far this season.
Â
Rounding out Ball State's top scorers was sophomore Hannah Ruthberg with a season-high tying 9.800 on bars.
Â
EVENT HIGHLIGHTS:
Rotation 1 – Beam
Rotation 2 – Floor
Rotation 3 - Vault
Rotation 4 – Bars
From Head Coach Joanna Saleem:
"We had some really good routines today. Suki's vault was great, and Hannah came back and turned in a nice bars routine. Erica was thrust into the floor lineup and nailed her routine, leading us with a 9.800."
Â
"This was a great practice for the MAC Championships. To be able to come into Eastern Michigan, which is hosting the championships, and see the layout of the venue and gain experience competing against two of the top teams in the league is invaluable."
Â
"We held together tonight when some people made mistakes. We were still able to keep our focus as a team and not give up. They fought all the way until the end, which is something we've talked about. Not letting up too soon and staying in it until the very last routine."
Â
"They are a strong group and having a good time out on the competition floor. They are staying optimistic, positive, and determined. They know there is more in the tank, and they are focused on doing what they can to improve each time out."Â Â Â
