THE WEEK AHEAD: The Ball State gymnastics program will get an earlier start to the week than originally planned, as it travels to Rupp Arena at Central Bank Center to battle preseason No. 13 Kentucky Friday at 7 p.m. for UK's Excite Night … The Cardinals will also visit Mid-American Conference rival Western Michigan Sunday for a 1 p.m. league showdown.

OPENING STRONG: Ball State opened the season with a score of 193.775 at No. 16 Missouri last Friday (Jan. 7) for its best opening-meet score since the 2018 season … While the Cardinals lost to the host Tigers (196.600), they were able to defeat Illinois State (191.600) in the tri-meet.

LAST TIME IN LEXINGTON: That 2018 opening-meet score mentioned above, a 194.475 the last time the Cardinals traveled to Kentucky on Jan. 5, 2018 … Ball State's effort earned head-to-head victories over Southeast Missouri (194.475) and George Washington (193.775) on the day, but fell short of then-No. 10 Kentucky (196.475) … None of the current Cardinals were on that 2018 roster.

SCORING 9.800-OR-BETTER: Ball State tallied three scores of 9.800-or-better opening weekend, led by senior Lauren Volpe's 9.850 mark on beam … Senior Stefanie Schweikert landed a team-best 9.800 on vault, while junior Megan Teter put together a 9.800 routine on bars … Last season, the Cardinals only recorded one score of 9.800-or-better opening weekend, a 9.825 by then-senior Arden Hudson on bars.

FRESHMAN IMPACT: Freshman Grace Sumner made a big impact her first time out, turning in Ball State's second-best effort on both bars (9.725) and beam (9.775) … The Indianapolis, Indiana, native grew up watching the Cardinals and attending Ball State gymnastics camps in hopes of one day earning a spot in the lineup.
