Despite Late Push, Soccer Suffers 2-1 Setback at Cincinnati
September 02, 2021 | Soccer
CINCINNATI, Ohio - - Despite trailing by two midway through second half, there was no quit in the Ball State soccer team Thursday night in a 2-1 loss to Cincinnati at Gettler Stadium.
Â
Things looked bleak for the Cardinals (1-2-0) after the Bearcats (3-1-1) scored its second goal in the 54th minute. To that point the hosts had held BSU to just three shots, none of which reached goal.
Â
However, Ball State turned up the pressure, breaking through for its first shot on net in the 66th minute thanks to senior Kennedy Metzger. The Cardinals pilled on the shots from there, with three more being saved by the UC goalkeeper over the next 17 minutes.
Â
Ball State finally broke through in the 87th minute when Metzger's header from just inside the 18 on the right side found the back of the net. It was her first career goal and gave BSU even more momentum.
Â
The Cardinals would get one more chance to even the score in the final seconds, but freshman Kaitlyn Fraser's shot from about 30-yards out was saved as time expired.
Â
As Ball State picked up the pressure on offense, they also shut out the Bearcats on defense, allowing just one shot on goal over the final 36 minutes of play. UC finished the game with 10 shots, six of which were on goal.
Â
The Ball State soccer team returns to action Sunday for its home opener at the Briner Sports Complex, welcoming Purdue Fort Wayne for a 1 p.m. kickoff.
