Ramos arrives in Muncie after spending last few seasons at UNLV
MUNCIE, Ind. – Angelina Ramos, who has spent the last three seasons as an assistant coach at UNLV, has been hired in the same capacity at Ball State, head coach Adrian Wheatley announced Friday. Ramos is set to focus on distance running in her role with the Cardinals.
"I'm excited to have Coach Ramos as our newest member of the Ball State University staff," Wheatley said. "She's bringing nine years of experience guiding student athletes focusing in the middle and distance events. Her energy, ability to build strong relationships, and commitment to developing athletes will be a valuable asset to our program."
Through her various stops, Ramos has tutored 24 All-Americans between the distances of 800m and 10k en route to winning conference championships in three different leagues. She's also worked with multiple Olympic trials qualifiers at events ranging from 800m all the way through 26.2 miles.
"I want to first and foremost thank Ball State head coach Adrian Wheatley, senior Karleigh Conner, graduate assistant coach Holly Hankenson, and the rest of the BSU search committee for believing in my plans for guiding Ball State's cross country squad, as well as in my fierce desire to invest everything I've got into these hard working distance/mid-distance athletes," Ramos said. "Development, as well as maintenance of a strong, healthy program culture, the imparting of values, winning without sacrificing character, and holistic care for student-athletes are of the utmost importance to me, and those strongholds aligned well with Coach Wheatley's reputation in this industry and with his vision for the program's future.
"The Cardinal women are gritty and aren't scared to be pushed. I think they have no idea how good they can be, and I can't wait to show them. I have an individual plan for each one to take a big step up into who they can be, and I can't wait to implement that and share that with them. I'm looking forward to rolling up my sleeves and getting to work. Chirp, Chirp!"
At UNLV, Ramos was crucial in helping the Runnin' Rebels to the 2020 Mountain West Indoor Conference team championship. She also guided Avi'Tal Wilson-Perteete to be a First-Team All-American in the 800m during the outdoor season.
As the primary practice planner for distance runners, Ramos helped all 10 of her focused athletes achieve a personal-best time in either cross country or track.
She also served as the recruiting coordinator, as well as managed operations and the buget.
Ramos started at UNLV after serving as an assistant track & field and cross country coach at Saginaw Valley State University in University Center, Michigan. She had been at SVSU since December 2014, where she helped produce eight All-Americans and 11 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference top-three finishers, and guided the team to a top-10 regional finish – an improvement of five spots in two years. Six school records were set in both indoor and outdoor competition under her watch. In the classroom, her women's cross country team earned a cumulative GPA of 3.6-3.8 consecutively each semester from 2015-18.
Â
Additional to her coaching duties, Ramos wrote and implemented strength programs for all 42 distance and middle distance student-athletes, served as volunteer coordinator for home track meets and assisted in the execution and production of seven high school indoor track meets that generated funds for the program.
Â
Prior to her time stint at SVSU, Ramos was an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator for the track & field and cross country teams at Metropolitan State University in Denver for three years. She qualified MSU's first women's cross country team to the national meet in program history in 2013, which produced an eight-place finish. Also, had four cross country student-athletes earn All-American status, while 10 accomplished the feat in track & field.
Â
Ramos competed as a student-athlete at Florida State University where she ran cross country and specialized in the 800m and 1500m for the track & field team. She graduated in 2008 with Magna cum Laude honors with a bachelor of arts & sciences degree in English writing as well as pre-medical track (exercise science).
Â
She received her master's of arts & sciences in communication from the University of Colorado in 2010. While in Boulder, she was an assistant coach at Niwot High School where she led the girls' team to a regional championship and had two runner-up finishers at the Colorado 4A State Meet.
Â
Ramos has gained certification at the USATF Coaching Level 1, USA Weightlifting Level 1 and USTFCCCA Strength/Conditioning Certification Course 310. She is the co-founder of the USTFCCCA's Female Coaching Mentorship Program, which pairs 20 female coach mentors with 23 mentees.
