Soccer Suffers Sunday Setback at Purdue

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - - In the 25th minute of Sunday's match at Purdue, Ball State soccer fifth-year senior forward Melissa Diceman took a pass from senior midfielder Sammi Corcoran, got a shot off just before being tackled by a defender, and knocked the ball past the diving goalie and off the left post into the net for her fourth career goal.

It was a highlight reel play which evened the score at 1-1 midway through the opening half. Unfortunately, the host Boilermakers (2-0-2) responded with four more goals and held the Cardinals (1-1-0) scoreless the rest of the way to earn a 5-1 victory at Folk Field.

"It was a disappointing game overall," head coach Josh Rife said after the loss. "We started well, had some great moments in the first half, but the second half was a different story. Moving forward, the biggest thing is how do we learn from this match and use it to make ourselves better."

Ball State had opportunities early in the match, with two shots from senior forward Tatiana Mason over the first 11 minutes. The first shot was saved, while the second was blocked by the Purdue defense.

Fifth-year senior Nicky Potts followed with three shots over a seven-minute span, two of which were also saved, before Diceman answered Purdue's 7th-minute goal with the equalizer.

While the host Boilermakers would break the tie with a 35th-minute goal, it was a one-goal contest heading into the half.

However, Purdue was able to capture the momentum early in the second half and score three goals over the final 45 minutes of play to secure the win.

The Ball State soccer team will play its first out-of-state opponent Thursday, when it travels to Cincinnati for a 7 p.m. contest under the lights at Gettler Stadium.
