MUNCIE, Ind. - - Four members of the Ball State women's golf team were named All-American Scholars by the Women's Golf Coaches Association (WGCA) for the 2020-21 season.
It marks the third year in a row the Cardinals have had at least four golfers earn the recognition by maintaining a minimum cumulative GPA of at least 3.5 and participating in at least 50 percent of their team's regularly scheduled competitive rounds.
"The WGCA All-American Scholar is a prestigious award that has been very special to our program for years," head coach Katherine Mowat said. "To maintain a minimum 3.5 cumulative GPA while competing in a sport that requires us to be on the road numerous days each semester is no small task. I am proud of my athletes for their accomplishments and for their commitment to giving their all as students and athletes at Ball State."
Liz Kim earns the honor for the fourth consecutive season, while Morgan Lewis, Hadley Moritz and Tiegan Taylor each earn the honor for the third time in their careers.
Kim, a senior from Dublin, Ohio, graduated this spring with a degree in psychological science and a 3.985 GPA. The 2021 MAC Sportswoman of the year, she played in all 17 rounds and was second on the team with a 76.41 average. She was Ball State's top finisher at the Islander Classic (Feb. 22-23) and the Colonel Classic (March 29-30), while placing second on the squad in two other events.
Lewis, a junior psychological science major who hails from Fishers, Indiana, owns a 3.699 GPA. She also played in all 17 rounds, finishing fourth on the squad with a 77.82 average. She tied for BSU's lowest round of the season with a 69 (-2) in the second round of the Spring Break Shootout (March 15-16). The effort helped her tied for second on the team at the event. Lewis was also Ball State's second-best golfer at the MAC Championships (April 23-24).
Moritz, a junior elementary education major from Wheaton, Illinois, carries a 3.977 GPA. Another 17-round golfer for the Cardinals, Moritz led the squad with a 76.12 average and was an All-MAC Second Team selection. She was Ball State's top finisher in three events, including the season-opening Mid-American Challenge (Feb. 8-9), the Spring Break Shootout and the Dolores Black Falcon Invitational (April 10-11).
Taylor, a senior exercise science major originally from Kelowna, British Columbia, maintains a 3.898 GPA. She played in 10 rounds for Ball State and finished the year with an 81.60 average. She shot a season-low 76 in the opening round of the Spring Break Shootout. Taylor also previously earned All-American Scholar honors as a freshman at New Mexico State.
Overall, the Ball State women's golf squad finished the 2020-21 academic year with a 3.703 cumulative GPA. The Cardinals also set a pair of program records over the course of the season with a program-low round of 286 and a 54-hole tournament record of 882 at the Spring Break Shootout.
