RICHMOND, Va. - - Junior breaststroke specialist Alex Bader and senior diver Caitlin Locante were honored by the College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) as Scholar All-Americans for their success in the pool and the classroom during the 2020-21 academic year.
This marks the seventh straight season a Ball State diver has been named a CSCAA Scholar All-American, while it's the first time a Cardinals swimmer has earned the honor since the 2013-14 campaign.
Both Bader and Locante earned honorable mention honors by maintaining a 3.50 GPA and achieving either a "B" time standard or qualifying for an NCAA Regional or Zone Diving Championship.
Bader, a junior nursing major with a 3.944 GPA, earns the honor after registering an NCAA "B" Cut time of 1:01.69 in the prelims of the 100 breaststroke at the 2021 Mid-American Conference Swimming & Diving Championships. It is the second-best individual time in program history and set her up for a third-place finish in the finals.
Locante, an elementary education major with a 3.862 GPA, earns the honor for the second straight season after advancing to the NCAA Zone C Diving Championships. Locante placed 23rd on the 3m board and 28th on the 1m board at the zone meet. She also set program records on the 3m board (347.78) and 1m board (305.48) over the course of the 2020-21 campaign.
Named a CSCAA Scholar All-America Team last week, the Cardinals capped a strong 2020-21 season with the program's best finish at the MAC Swimming & Diving Championships since the 2005 season, placing fifth as a team with 320 total points.
Ball State had its first individual MAC Champion since the 2014 season and set seven program records over the course of the campaign.
