Rogers, Distance Runners Shine At Miami
April 24, 2021 | Track & Field
OXFORD, Ohio - Battling rainy conditions and athletes from most of the MACÂ ahead of the upcoming outdoor conference championships, the Ball State track & field team turned in a triple jump win and eight top-4 finishes Saturday at Miami's RedHawk Invitational.
Jenelle Rogers won the triple jump to lead BSU, which took a distance-runner-heavy team to the meet that featured several MAC teams to create at least a halfway feel of a conference championship. Rogers, who marked 11.68 at Vanderbilt last week, record 11.62 this time for first place. Half of the 10 entries in the event were from MAC schools.Â
"Jenelle winning is really good. That's not her primary even so she competed really well," head coach Brian Etelman said. "We showed a lot of grit in tough conditions and those who did well really stepped up and overcame the weather."
Karlie Zumbro and Kylee Mastin were at the top of a long list of runners in the 800m, both finishing in the top 4. Zumbro, who rarely runs standalone 800m races, placed 2nd of 45 in the event, clocking 2:14.82.
"Karlie's time was a PR and a really good mark for a heptathlete," Etelman said. "Among attached runners who are representing schools, she placed first and won. The 800 is her best in the heptathlon and that's what she'll need to close to have a shot at winning at the MAC meet."
Just behind Zumbro was Mastin, who owns a time of 2:13.52 from last week and ran 2:16.97 to place 4th among the field of 45.
Elka Machan placed 2nd of 39 runners in the 1500m with a mark of 4:34.86. Grace Dean was right behind her with a PR time of 4:36.68 in third place. In the steeplechase, Cayla Eckenroth (11:12.20) was 4th of 14 runners, right with teammate Juliana Stogsdill at 11:12.57 in 5th place. Emmalyne Tarsa was in the middle of the pack in the 5K with an 18:30.09 time.Â
Â
In field events, Charity Griffith was 4th in the high jump at 1.65m. Abby Denham, who already owns the school record javelin throw at 43.51m, measured 40.77m on Saturday to place 4th of 26 throwers.
Jennah Rodgers turned in a competitive run to place 7th of 18 runners in the 100m hurdles with a time of 15.76.
The Cardinals will now continue to train and prepare for the MAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships, which are May 7-8 at Miami.
