GYM CARDS SET NEW SCHOOL RECORD!
February 06, 2021 | Gymnastics
YPSILANTI, Mich. - In what was almost a preview of the MAC Gymnastics Championships, the Ball State gymnastics team set a school record with a 195.975 score. It's the fourth time in two seasons the Cardinals have set a school meet scoring record. The record score was also good the highest of the day in the quad meet at Eastern Michigan, defeating EMU, Kent State and Western Michigan.Â
"It was like a mini-MAC meet. For our first away meet, the team did awesome," head coach Joanna Saleem said. "It was a fun thing to be part of and we're excited for the girls. Today was a great confidence booster for us."
Victoria Henry competed in three events and had standout scores in each of them. She won vault with a 9.925, scored 9.750 on bars and 9.800 on floor. Claudia Goyco and Megan Teter both scored 9.900 on floor and Grace Evans won bars with a 9.875 score.
As a team, the Cardinals left some points out there in their previous two meets on balance beam. Saturday at EMU, everyone stayed on and delivered. Four different Cardinals scored 9.775 or better and that energy that came from that success got the team going the rest of the day.
"It was great for them to come up and compete on beam with some confidence," Saleem said. "Every time you can be successful, you take that to the next event."
After a season-high and meet-best 49.275 on floor, the Cardinals had an advantage finishing the day on vault, an event where they are traditionally strong. BSU totaled 48.900 on vault, led by Henry's 9.925 and Arden Hudson's 9.850. Henry raised her difficulty level and landed a yurchenko one-and-a-half on vault in her first attempt ever.
"It was a cool moment. it was really exciting," Saleem said. "To see her as a freshman go out there and nail that vault was fun to watch."Â
Head-to-head on the season, Ball State has outscored all four of its MAC opponents. BSU outscored league preseason favorite Central Michigan on Jan. 24 and bested last year's top-scoring team Western Michigan. The Cardinals have enjoyed the early season success and they have the ability and the mindset to keep building.Â
"Everyone built on each other and fed off each other. it was great to see them enjoy themselves, play with the team and take advantage of being out there on the competition floor. The funny thing is, we can do even better," Saleem said. "I'm really excited to see what we do over the next month or so. We had some mistakes and we didn't let it shake us. That's what you want to do - be gritty and compete to the very last routine."
Ball State is scheduled to compete at the QG Invitational at Lindenwood Friday, Feb. 12. Two days later, the Cards will be at Worthen Arena for a 3 p.m. home meet with Northern Illinois.
