Following a school-record team effort last Saturday, Ball State gymnastics is back for two meets this weekend. The Gym Cards have the GymQuarters Invitational Friday at Lindenwood before coming home for a meet Sunday with Northern Illinois.
Ball State's 195.975 team score at Eastern Michigan last week is the MAC's highest mark of the season. The Cardinals took off after a strong beam, their best performance in that event since the 2015 season. In the first two meets of the season, Ball State scored 47.550 and 47.525 on beam. The Cards delivered 49.000 on beam and also had season highs on floor and vault.
The performance, good enough to outscore Eastern Michigan, Western Michigan and Kent State, kept up the team's trend from a successful season last year when the Cardinals set team school records for points in three different meets. BSU scored 195.750 vs. Eastern Michigan, 195.800 at Northern Illinois and 195.850 in the season finale vs. North Carolina to keep rewriting the record book.
School records aside, head coach Joanna Saleem noted Saturday that while there is excitement and momentum, the truly exciting thing is that the Cardinals can continue to improve. Ball State owns the conference's highest single score but still ranks fourth in average score. The Cardinals once again will be competing alongside Eastern Michigan, a familiar opponent who hosted the quad meet last Saturday. EMU is currently two spots ahead of BSU in the national rankings.
Ball State and the five other teams at Gym Quarters can be seen on FloSports, which requires a subscription. Sunday's meet vs. NIU is at 3 p.m. and will be available on ESPN3 for free. Fans can also get glimpses into the team on social media at @BallStateGYM.
