BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Heading into the home stretch of the season, the Ball State gymnastics team needs to keep piling up strong scores and the Cardinals delivered Friday night at Bowling Green. Ball State put up its second-best score of the season with a 195.550 while Bowling Green by a wide margin.Â
"It was an exciting meet with a lot of energy," head coach Joanna Saleem said. "We started off really strong on bars and kept building from there. I'm so proud of how the entire team came together and performed today."
Freshman Hannah Ruthberg was the best all-around competitor in the gym, scoring 39.225 across all four rotations. Ruthberg put up 9.825 on bars and beam and a 9.800 on vault. Ruthberg's performance was the second-highest all-around mark in the MAC this season and the sixth-highest in school history. Marissa Nychyk also competed all around and totaled a 39.100 with good scores across all four routines.
"Hannah had an outstanding meet in her first all-around of her career," Saleem said. "Marissa also had a wonderful meet."
In individual moments, many Cardinals shined on the night. Arden Hudson's 9.925 beam score set a new school record in that event. Saleem lauded not only her performance, but her leadership.Â
"Arden has invested so much into this team this year," the head coach said. Leadership looks a little different when you're a senior, it isn't always easy. To see her break the school record on beam tonight gave me goosebumps. I'm so proud of and happy for her."Â
Â
Saleem added: "When the gymnastics is more fun, it is performed better and then good scores follow. But you have to focus on staying present and chipping away the things you can control. And we've done a great job of that."
The Cards return home to Worthen Arena Sunday, Feb. 28 for the home finale.Â
