MUNCIE - Gritty is an adjective the Ball State gymnastics team uses often. To overcome obstacles and deliver. To be unflappable under pressure,. The Cardinals were just that Sunday at Worthen Arena, posting a 195.275 in a dual meet with Northern Illinois.Â
The Cardinals have now outscored all 11 of their opponents this season after beating NIU 195.275 - 193.350.Â
"I liked that we were gritty. Some obstacles came up throughout the day, and competing Friday-Sunday, for the to roll with the punches and be competitive is something to be proud of," head coach Joanna Saleem said. "This team is getting so good at being adaptable and that's going to serve us well. We had a fun, focused approach and that was huge. It was a nice score, a nice performance. For us, it's still a building block."Â
A freshman and a senior led the team on Sunday, with Hannah Ruthberg and Arden Hudson each getting a pair of 9.800 scores. Ruthberg won bars with a 9.850 mark and added a 9.800 on floor. Â
"Loved watching Hannah. She competed really well," Saleem said. "It was great seeing Taylor hit on beam. She's such a pretty beam worker, the way she flows in her routine. It's pretty to watch."
Saleem mentioned Marissa Nychyk's performance as gritty after she was a little banged up after the meet on Friday. Nychyk was a solid 9.725 on bars and 9.675 on beam.
"That is a testament to her dedication and her commitment to what she's trying to do," Saleem said.
