Program Record Ends Strong Run at House of Champions Invite

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - - The Ball State swimming & diving program saved the best for last at the House of Champions Invitational, finishing the meet with the first program record of the season at the IUPUI Natatorium.

The quartet of freshman Hannah Jones, freshman Gracey Payne, senior Alexa McDonald, and junior Apsara Sakbun combined for a time of 3:23.46 to break the program record in the 400 freestyle relay to cap an amazing three days of action for the men's and women's squads.

The women's team would end up placing second among the nine-team field with a score of 1,347, being narrowly edged out by Illinois at 1,364.

The men's squad climbed up the team rankings each day, placing fourth among the seven-team field with a score of 891.5. It was just three points behind UIC for third place.
Â
In addition to the program record, the women's squad also picked up two more event wins, taking the top spot in both the 200 breaststroke and 1650 freestyle. Senior Alex Bader won the 200 breaststroke with the third-best individual time in program history at 2:15.35. She edged out sophomore teammate Laura Wright who finished in 2:15.87, just off her career-best time of 2:15.29.

The other win came from sophomore sensation Marcella Ribeiro, whose time of 16:46.89 in the 1650 freestyle was 15.74 faster than the second-place finisher.

Other highlights on the women's side came from Sakbun and freshman Lilia Newkirk. Sakbun placed fifth in the 100 freestyle in 51.17, after tying the sixth-best individual time in program history by touching the wall in 51.00 in the prelims. Newkirk broke into BSU's top 10 in the 200 backstroke at seventh with a prelim clocking of 2:02.93.

The men also closed the meet strong, with junior Jack Wolfred, junior Owen Chaye, senior Ryan Short, and senior Duncan McLarty combining for the ninth-best time in program history in the 400 freestyle at 3:03.15.

Junior Bryce Handshoe and senior Hunter Ongay were the men's top individual finishers on the day. Handshoe claimed fifth in the 200 butterfly with the third-best individual effort in program history at 1:50.97, while Ongay earned fifth on the 1M diving board with a score of 274.75.

Also breaking into the top 10 on BSU's event list was freshman Max Kruglov with the fifth-best mark in the 200 backstroke at 1:51.08.

The Ball State men's and women's swimming & diving programs will now turn their attention back to training through the holiday break, returning to action Jan. 7 at Youngstown State.
