Swimming & Diving Makes Moves on Day 2 at House of Champions

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - - It was another strong day for the Ball State swimming and diving program as the women's squad took the lead in its nine-team field and the men climbed to fifth on the second day of the House of Champions Invitational at the IUPUI Natatorium.

Using three event wins on the second day, the women's squad raised its point total to 898 which is 18 points ahead of second place Illinois. The men used 11 top 10 performances to raise its total to 574.5 which is just 20 points behind third-place UIC In the seven-team field.
Â
The women started the finals session with back-to-back event victories, starting with a time of 1:41.30 in the 200 medley relay. Junior Shelby Crist, senior Alex Bader, freshman Hannah Jones and junior Apsara Sakbun combined for the fifth-fastest time in program history.

Freshman Hannah Jones made it back-to-back event wins with the third-fastest effort on BSU's individual top 10 list with a time of 54.55 in the 100 butterfly. She was one of three Cardinals to compete in the championship heat of the event finals.

Freshman Abby Hartshorne placed sixth in 55.95, while junior Phoebe Rensink took seventh in the finals after turning in the fourth-fastest time in BSU annals at 55.17 in the prelims.

Ball State's third event win came in the 100 breaststroke with A. Bader's final touch coming in at 1:01.86. In addition to the three event wins, the Ball State women's squad earned 17 top 10 finishes and registered six more times on the BSU top 10 list.

One of those came from freshman Alexa Arkenberg who place fourth in the 400 IM at 4:24.25 for the third-best individual effort in the BSU record books. The other top times came in the 100 backstroke, with Jones registering the fifth-best time to place third in the finals at 55.25, while freshman Lilia Newkirk added the seventh-best time of 56.16 in the prelims.

On the men's side, the Cardinals opened finals competition at the IUPUI Natatorium with the third-best effort in program history in the 200 medley relay at 1:30.93. The time compiled by freshman Ethan Pheifer, sophomore Joey Garberick, junior Bryce Handshoe and junior Jack Wolfred also placed fourth in the meet.

Handshoe would go on to place seventh in the 100 butterfly, clocking in at 49.30 to move into sixth on BSU's all-time charts.

BSU's best individual finish came from senior Hunter Ongay who took third in the 3m diving competition with a score of 293.85. Not far behind was Garberick in the 100 breaststroke with a sixth-place clocking of 55.50.

Freshman Michael Burns also had a strong showing in the 100 breaststroke with the ninth-fastest individual time in program history at 56.92.

Overall, the men's squad turned in seven of the top 10 individual efforts in program history on the day, with two coming in the 100 backstroke. Pheifer clocked in at 50.90 to take over ninth on BSU's all-time list, while classmate Reece Manning added a time of 51.00 to move into 10th.

The other top marks were a 10th-best effort of 4:05.59 by freshman Max Kruglov in the 400 IM, while the 800 freestyle relay clocked in at 6:49.38 to tie the current 10th-best mark. Junior Landyn Riester, junior Aiden Maurer, freshman Michael Mitsynskyy and senior Ryan Short comprised that quartet.
