Swimming & Diving Starts Strong at House of Champions

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - - The Ball State swimming & diving program got off to a strong start Thursday afternoon, with seven performances which broke into the top 10 in program history on the opening day of the IUPUI House of Champions Invitational.

The women's 500 freestyle set a blistering tone to open the day at the IUPUI Natatorium, carrying over a strong preliminary effort in the morning to a solid finish in the finals. Sophomore standout Marcella Ribeiro led the way, winning the event in 4:53.07 after also leading taking top billing in the prelims.

Sophomore Mary Kate Phillips also added a solid finals run, taking fourth overall with the eighth-fastest effort in program history at 4:59.14. While she finished seventh in the finals, Katie Walker's prelim time of 4:58.78 was the seventh-best individual effort in the BSU record books.

That strong start helped the women's squad accumulate 354 total points over the first five events, to rank second among the nine-team field. The effort is just five points shy of first-place Indianapolis which scored 359 points.

The women also turned in the third-fastest time in program history in the 400 medley relay (3:44.03), the fourth-best clocking in the 200 freestyle relay (1:33.67), and the 10th-best effort in the 400 medley relay (3:48.14).Â

Freshman Alexa Arkenberg also registered the eighth-fastest 200 IM on BSU's all-time list at 2:07.52 to finish seventh in the event. Junior Apsara Sakbun added a fourth-place finish in the 50 freestyle to lead the Cardinals in that event.

Overall, Ball State's women's squad turned in eight top 10 performances against a highly talented field.

On the men's side, the Cardinals tallied 196.5 points and finished the day sixth among the seven-team field. Sophomore Joey Garberick was BSU's top individual performer, taking 12th in the 50 freestyle with a finals time of 20.71.

Senior Ryan Short led Ball State's men's squad in the 500 freestyle with a 14th-place time of 4:38.78, while freshman Max Kruglov led the charge in the 200 IM in 17th at 1:53.43.

Ball State went on to close the day with the third-best effort in program history in the 400 medley relay at 3:19.48.

Action continues in the IUPUI House of Champions Invitational on Friday, with swimming prelims starting at 10 a.m., diving at 1 p.m. and swimming finals at 6 p.m. at the IUPUI Natatorium.
