Cardinals Drop Heartbreaker to Rockets
October 10, 2021 | Soccer
TOLEDO, Ohio – Tatiana Mason collected her second goal of the season on Sunday as the Ball State soccer team returned to the pitch for a Mid-American Conference contest with Toledo. The Cardinals (4-7-1, 2-3-1) fell to the Rockets (8-4-2, 3-3-0), 2-1 from Paul Hotmer Field.
The Rockets came out firing with a shot on target just 22 seconds into the contest, but Bethany Moser was up for the task to make the stop.
At the eight-minute mark, Mason picked up her first shot on goal, but was unable to beat the UT netminder.
In the 17th minute, the Rockets sent a ball on net, but newly inserted goalie Alex DeRuvo was up for the challenge and made the save. Toledo rattled off three more shots, but DeRuvo was unfazed and made all three saves.
The Cardinals ended the half strong as they produced the final four shots on goal but were unable to beat the UT goalie. The match went into the half level at 0-0.
The second half started slow, as neither squad was able to get a shot on frame until the 61st minute when the Rockets put a shot on goal, but DeRuvo kept the ball out.
Kennedy Metzger recorded back-to-back shots on goal at the 74-minute mark but could not beat the Toledo goaltender.
In the 82nd minute, Nicky Potts set up Mason who buried a shot into the back of the net and broke the stalemate. Mason notched her second goal of the year, while Potts earned her first assist on the season.
The lead did not last long as the Rockets needed just 19 seconds to tie the match when Claire Cahalan found the back of the net. Four minutes later, Stephanie Currie broke the tie as she recorded a goal for the Rockets.
BSU returns to the friendly confines of the Briner Sports Complex on Thursday, Oct. 14, for a MAC matchup with Ohio. Kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m.
From the Coach – Head Coach Josh Rife
"Disappointed to play well enough to get a good result today and came away with nothing. For 83 minutes we played well, but unfortunately the last seven minutes proved to be costly. The objective is pretty clear moving forward. We need to put together some wins if we want to have a chance to make the conference tournament."
