Men’s Tennis Stages Thrilling Comeback to Win at Cleveland State
January 30, 2021 | Men's Tennis
CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The Ball State men's tennis opened its weekend trip to Cleveland State with a dramatic, 4-3 victory Saturday.
The Cardinals prevailed in each of the final four matches on the court, including three of them in three sets, to dig out of a 3-0 hole. Chris Adams nipped CSU's Maxime Mareschal-Hay in a third-set tiebreaker in the decisive match.
Ball State, coming off a split of two matches 10 days ago at Notre Dame, improved to 2-1. Cleveland State, which also opened its season against Notre Dame, fell to 0-2. The Cardinals and Vikings will meet again Sunday at 11 a.m.
After Cleveland State won the doubles point and took the top two singles positions in straight sets, Ball State needed to win every remaining match on the court. The Cardinals did just that.
Sophomore Eli Herran started the BSU rally at No. 6 singles. After winning his opening set in a tiebreaker, Herran blanked JuandeDios Abboud in the second set to put the Cardinals on the board. The remaining three matches would all go the distance.
Sophomore Vince Orlando came from a set down at No. 4 singles and beat Clark Bilinovich 6-4 in the third for the second BSU point. Then freshman Sajin Smith, after splitting two tight sets, rolled to a 6-0 win in the third over Raul Teichmann at the No. 5 spot to draw the Cardinals even.
That left it up to Adams and Mareschal-Hay who battled into a third set tiebreaker on the No. 3 singles court. The BSU senior outlasted the CSU freshman 7-3 in breaker to complete the comeback and clinch the victory.
