Men’s Volleyball Drops 3-2 Heartbreaker In Season Opener
January 22, 2021 | Men's Volleyball
FAIRFAX, Va. - It came as no surprise that today's Ball State men's volleyball season opener at George Mason would come down to the wire. The match started as a back-and-forth affair and eventually come down to a fifth set. Unfortunately, the Cardinals (0-1) would fall to the Patriots (1-0) in the final frame, 17-15, to drop the match 3-2.
After not playing since March 7, 2020, the Cardinals came out a little sluggish to open the afternoon's action, allowing George Mason to take the first set, 25-19.
But the Cardinals would use their veteran crew of Preseason All-Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association selection Kaleb Jenness along with returning letter winners Quinn Isaacson, Blake Reardon and Will Hippe, to comeback to take sets two and four from the Patriots.
The outcome could have gone to either team today. Ball State had the advantage several times, especially in the third set when they pushed ahead of the Patriots by a score 15-9. Unfortunately, following a time out, the Patriots would storm back to take the third frame, 25-23.
In the fourth, Ball State continued to fight, as both teams were neck-and-neck. The Cardinals trailed late, 22-18, but a few George Mason errors along with an ace from Reardon and kills from Bryce Behrendt, Wil McPhillips and Jenness allowed BSU to send the match into a fifth set.
The Cardinals opened the fifth with a service ace from Isaacson and a kill from Reardon to take the early 2-0 edge. Both traded points throughout the remainder of the set, but the Patriots would come out on top at the end.
For the game, Ball State was plagued by service errors with 23 while George Mason ended the competition with 15. Offensively, Reardon led Ball State with 24 kills and Isaacson dished out 57 assists. Defensively, Hippe had six block assists and one solo stuff, while teammate Nick LaVanchy collected 10 digs.
The Ball State men's volleyball team continues non-conference action at No. 13 George Mason Saturday. First serve is at noon in the Recreation Athletic Complex.
