Ten Ball State Football Players Recognized on Athlon’s Preseason All-League Teams
June 18, 2020 | Football
MUNCIE, Ind. – The Ball State football team recently had five offensive players and five defensive players named to Athlon's preseason All-Mid-American Conference teams. Seven of those 10 players were either first or second team picks.
Highlighted on the offensive side of the ball was running back Caleb Huntley as a first team honoree. Huntley has rushed for at least 1,000 yards in two of his three years. If he reaches that mark again this fall, he will become just the third Cardinal ever to accomplish that feat (Marcus Merriweather, 1999-2002; Jahwan Edwards, 2011-14).
Two defensive players were named to Athlon's first team – linebacker Jaylin Thomas and cornerback Antonio Phillips. Thomas is Ball State's top returning tackler as he finished with 97 stops in 2019. Phillips registered interceptions in three straight conference games last fall and totaled four picks in 11 games played.
Four more players earned second team accolades – quarterback Drew Plitt, wide receiver Justin Hall, offensive lineman Curtis Blackwell and cornerback Amechi Uzodinma II. Ball State's offense led the MAC in scoring (34.8 points per game) and total offense (463.0 yards per game) one season ago. Uzodinma was part of a defensive unit that produced 24 turnovers in 2019, the most by any team in the league.
The other three Cardinals to make Athlon's list were offensive lineman Kaleb Slaven (third team), linebacker Christian Albright (fourth team) and safety Bryce Cosby (fourth team).
