
Season-Opening Duel Goes To Georgia Southern

STATESBORO, Georgia - Host Georgia Southern busted out for five runs in the bottom of the 8th inning to take a close game from Ball State in the season opener Friday night. The Cardinals allowed just six hits on the night but GSU managed to capitalize late in a 6-0 Georgia Southern win.Â
John Baker turned in a strong start and newcomer Devin Porter led the team with two hits (including a double) in his college debut. Mack Murphy added a triple early in the game as BSU managed four hits on the night. GSU's Jordan Jackson worked 5.0 innings for the win, striking out nine Cards.

With Ball State battling in a 1-0 game, Georgia Southern struck for five runs in the bottom of the 8th. Jason Swan smacked a bases-loaded, three-run double to make it 4-0 and a two-run homer from Jarrett Brown provided the final score.Â
JOHNNY B GOOD
John Baker took the loss in the box score, but turned in his usual strong performance. The senior ace when 5.0 innings, allowing just one run while striking out seven and he left with the Cardinals within a run. Only two baserunners reached scoring position against Baker, who walked two and scattered three hits. Baker now has 277 career strikeouts as a Cardinal.
LIGHTS OUT
One strange occurrence took place with the Cardinals batting while down 1-0 in the top of the 7th. Mack Murphy was batting and suddenly the lights in the stadium went out. After an umpire conference, the two teams played on and the Cardinals went down in order.Â
