Confidence Check For The Gym Cards At Georgia
February 14, 2020 | Gymnastics
ATHENS, Georgia - Weeks with two meets are always a challenge in college gymnastics, and heading into Sunday's home meet Ball State has showed its up to the task. A nice showing in the environment at Georgia, capped off with a conference win, is a confidence boost for the Cardinals.
"It gives you confidence to see how we shape up with a program like Georgia," head coach Joanna Saleem said. "They treated us with a lot of hospitality and respect and it was a great opportunity to show the fans and judges that we're also a pretty strong program."
Ball State turned in 14 routines of 9.750 or better and edged Eastern Michigan in scoring Friday night and will have a quick turnaround before competing in Worthen Arena Sunday afternoon.
Georgia, the No. 11 team in the nation, finished the night with 197.075. Ball State's 194.725 was just one step better than Eastern Michigan's 194.700.
"It was a great environment, we started and finished strong," Saleem said. "There were a lot of good things to take away from tonight."
Marissa Nychyk and Arden Hudson each recorded three strong routines. Nychyk, 38.825 in all-around, went 9.775 or better in vault, bars and beam. Her 9.800 on beam was a season high. Hudson led the team in vault and beam and provided a solid 9.700 on bars.
Saleem lauded the Cardinals who kept their composure in a loud arena - particularly when Georgia was on floor at the end. "Grace did a great job on bars and Bri on beam following up after a mistake. Bri, Rachel, Arden and Taylor did a great job of staying focused. It was really fun."
Fans can catch the Gym Cards Sunday at 1 p.m. There will be a sunglasses and Hawaiian lei giveaway and also recognition for mental health and organ donation.Â
