Stockton’s defense has helped the Cardinals to the top of MAC West Division
MUNCIE, Ind. -- Ball State defensive coordinator and inside linebackers coach Tyler Stockton is among the nominees for this year's Broyles Award, presented annually to the nation's top assistant coach.
Â
The second-youngest defensive coordinator in the FBS at age 30, Stockton leads a Ball State defense that has been a major factor in the Cardinals' emergence this season. BSU enters the final week of the regular season at 4-1 and playing for the MAC West Division championship.
Â
Ball State has surrendered fewer points each game than the previous one this season, most recently posting season bests for points (20), total yards (342) and passing yards (188) allowed in last week's win at Central Michigan. BSU had its best day against the run a week earlier, holding Toledo to 42 rushing yards, 179 below its average.
Â
The Cardinals rank 12th nationally with 8.0 tackles per loss per game, bolstered by 23 TFLs combined over the past two games. Fifteen different players have recorded a TFL this season for the Cardinals, led by MAC sack leader Anthony Ekpe with his seven TFLs and five sacks.
Â
At the inside linebacker position, Stockton coaches two of the top 25 tacklers in the country in Brandon Martin (9th) at 11.6 tackles per game and Jaylin Thomas (23rd) at 10.0.
Â
Stockton is one of 56 nominees from across the country for this year's Broyles Award, named for hall of fame Arkansas head coach Frank Broyles.
Â
Ball State hosts Western Michigan at noon Saturday with a spot in the MAC Championship Game on the line. The game will be available on ESPN+ and via the Ball State Radio Network at 104.1 WLBC.
